Text Messaging

Send SMS and MMS from any Salesforce record.

The ConnectSMS Text Messages component puts the whole text history and a composer on your record pages. Choose who to text and which business number to send from, then send now or schedule it.

How do you send SMS from Salesforce? With ConnectSMS, an admin adds the ConnectSMS Text Messages component to a record page in Lightning App Builder. On the record, you type the message, check the business number it's sent from, and select Send. ConnectSMS sends it through your Twilio account and shows its delivery status on the record.

Animation: a user writes "Hi Sarah, your appointment is confirmed for tomorrow at 10:30 AM." in the ConnectSMS Text Messages component on a Salesforce Contact record. ConnectSMS sends it through the company's own Twilio account to the customer's phone, the status changes to Delivered, and the customer's reply "Perfect, thank you." appears on the same record.

How it works

From the record to the customer's phone, in three steps.

Step 1 · Admin

Add the component to a page

In Lightning App Builder, drag ConnectSMS Text Messages onto a record page. It works on Contacts, Leads, Accounts, Cases and any object your admin sets up in Recipients.

Step 2 · You

Choose who and from where

If the record has more than one phone field, pick the number to text. The phone button lists only the business numbers you're allowed to send from, with your default first.

Step 3 · You

Write, check and send

Type or insert a template, preview it with merge fields filled in, then send now or schedule it. The status updates on the record as Twilio reports it.

On every record

Everything you need to text, without leaving the record.

The Text Messages component is small enough for a record page sidebar and adapts to the Salesforce mobile app.

  • Pick the number to text

Records with several phone fields show Phone number to text. Numbers in any country work; invalid or opted-out ones are marked and can't be used.

  • Send from an authorized number

Only the business numbers you can send from are listed, with your default first.

  • Templates and quick replies

Search your templates and insert one in a click. Quick replies work on any record.

  • Merge fields with fallbacks

{!Contact.FirstName|there} fills in record data, and the fallback covers an empty field.

  • Preview before sending

See the merged message, its characters, segments and encoding, and the number it goes to.

  • Pictures and files (MMS)

Attach up to 10 files and 5 MB in total, for US, Canadian and Australian numbers from an MMS-capable business number, once your admin has turned MMS on.

  • Send now or schedule

Schedule in 15-minute slots up to 35 days ahead, in your Salesforce time zone.

  • Cancel and retry

Cancel a queued or scheduled message before it reaches Twilio. Retry a failed one as a new message linked to the first.

  • Full history and status

Every message with who sent it, when, and its status, from Queued and Sending to Sent and Delivered.

  • Failures in plain language

When a message fails, ConnectSMS says why and what to do next, with the Twilio error code.

  • Opt-out protection

If the person has opted out, the composer tells you and won't send.

  • Updates on their own

New messages and status changes appear without reloading the page. Drafts survive a reload for up to 24 hours.

Segments first

Know the segment count before you send.

Texts are billed per segment, and one emoji can cut how much fits in each by more than half. ConnectSMS works out the encoding and segment count as you write.

  • Characters, segments and encoding in the preview, before anything is sent
  • Tells you which characters switched the message to Unicode
  • Warns when a message needs several segments, each billed as a separate text

Messages can be up to 1,600 characters. Twilio bills each segment as a separate text.

Personalize safely

Personalized messages that never go out half-filled.

Merge fields fill in Salesforce data when the message is sent. Add a fallback after a vertical bar for fields that might be empty.

{!Contact.FirstName|there} becomes Hi Sarah on Sarah's record and Hi there when the first name is blank.

If a field can't be filled and has no fallback, ConnectSMS names the field and won't send until it's fixed.

How templates and merge fields work

Hi Sarah, your warranty for the Model 7 boiler ends on {!Contact.Warranty_End__c}.

Fix these before sending:
  • Some merge fields could not be filled in: {!Contact.Warranty_End__c}. Fix the template, fill in the record, or add a fallback such as {!Contact.FirstName|there}.

Scheduling

Schedule customer messages, checked again at send time.

Choose a date and a 15-minute time slot up to 35 days ahead. Times use your Salesforce time zone, shown next to the time so there's no guessing.

  • Scheduled messages appear on the record with Sends Tue, Oct 13 at 9:00 AM
  • Before sending, ConnectSMS checks permissions, number access and opt-outs again
  • Cancel sending any time before the message is handed to Twilio

Everything about Schedule for later

Animation: on Sarah Chen's Contact record, Alex Kim writes "Hi Sarah, a reminder of your visit today at 10:30 AM. Reply here if you need to reschedule.", opens the Send options and chooses Schedule for later, then changes the date from today to Oct 13, 2026 and picks the 9:00 AM slot. After Schedule, the reminder appears on the record as Scheduled, with "Sends Tue, Oct 13 at 9:00 AM EDT" and a Cancel sending link.

What happens after you select Send

  1. Recorded in Salesforce
  2. Queued
  3. Handed to your Twilio account
  4. Sent to the carrier
  5. Delivered

Each step shows on the record. If Twilio's answer is ever lost, the message is marked Unknown and checked with Twilio rather than sent twice. How reliability works

FAQ

Texting from Salesforce: common questions

Can Salesforce send SMS?

Yes, with an SMS app such as ConnectSMS. Once it's installed, people send texts from the ConnectSMS Text Messages component on record pages, from the shared inbox and from outreach, and Flow, Apex and REST integrations can send them too. Every message goes out through your Twilio account.

Can I schedule an SMS from Salesforce?

Yes. One-to-one texts can be scheduled in 15-minute slots up to 35 days ahead, in your Salesforce time zone. Outreach can send once, daily, weekly or monthly in the time zone you choose. Before a scheduled message goes out, ConnectSMS checks permissions, number access and opt-outs again.

Can I send MMS from Salesforce?

Yes, once an admin turns on attachments. Pictures and files are sent as MMS to US, Canadian and Australian numbers from MMS-capable business numbers, up to 10 files and 5 MB per message. ConnectSMS shares each file through a temporary link that expires after a set number of hours.

Which Salesforce records can I text from?

Contacts, Leads, Accounts and Cases are set up out of the box. Admins can add other objects in Recipients and choose which phone fields ConnectSMS uses, in order.

Which number do replies come from?

Always the business number the customer texted. ConnectSMS never switches numbers on a reply, so the customer keeps seeing the same number, and people without Send access to that number can read the conversation but not reply.
