Salesforce Campaigns

Text your Salesforce Campaign members, from the campaign itself.

Use a Salesforce Campaign as the audience of a ConnectSMS outreach. Its Contacts and Leads are texted from your business number, with opt-outs, duplicate numbers and missing numbers left out automatically.

  • No credit card required
  • Listed on Salesforce AgentExchange
  • Then $120 per user per year
  • Runs on your own Twilio account

How do you send SMS to a Salesforce Campaign? Create a ConnectSMS outreach, choose Members of a Salesforce Campaign as the audience and pick the campaign. ConnectSMS texts the campaign's Contacts and Leads through your own Twilio account, reads the member list again every time the outreach sends, and shows who will receive it before you confirm.

Contacts and leads in the campaign are texted. Each run reads the members at the time it sends.

Only records with a valid mobile number in the phone field you choose receive the message. People who opted out are always skipped.

Why a Campaign

Your campaign list is already your audience.

Marketing and sales teams already group people into Salesforce Campaigns. ConnectSMS texts those members directly, so the list you manage in Salesforce is the list that gets the message.

Contacts and Leads together

One campaign can hold both. Each member is texted as their Contact record, or as their Lead record when they have no Contact.

Always the current members

Each run reads the members at the moment it sends. Add or remove people in Salesforce and the next run follows.

Nothing to export

No spreadsheets or uploads to a separate texting tool. Messages, statuses and replies stay in Salesforce.

How Campaign audiences work

The rules ConnectSMS applies to every campaign member.

The Campaign audience uses the same checks as every outreach. A few rules are specific to campaigns.

  • The outreach owner must be able to see the campaign, and members whose records the owner can't read are never messaged
  • Contacts and Leads must be set up for texting in your org; if one of them isn't, those members are skipped and the review says so
  • Phone number to text defaults to the first phone field with a valid number, in the order your admin chose (Mobile, then Phone, out of the box)
  • One message per phone number, so two members who share a number get one text
  • People who opted out are always skipped, whichever campaign they're in
  • Merge fields are filled from Contact fields, so members who are Leads are left out of a message that uses them

Contacts, Leads and merge fields

Reaching Leads in a campaign.

A campaign message that uses merge fields, such as {!Contact.FirstName|there}, is filled from Contact fields. Lead members can't be filled in, so they aren't sent that message.

  • To reach everyone, write a message without merge fields. Contacts and Leads both receive it.
  • To personalize for Contacts, use merge fields and let the review show how many Leads are left out.
  • To personalize for Leads, send a separate outreach using Records that match filters or a report on the Lead object.
  • The audience check warns you before you send, and the count of people who will be sent the message already reflects it.

Campaign ideas

What teams send to campaign members.

A few patterns that fit Salesforce Campaigns well. Each is one outreach with its own schedule and results.

Event reminders

Send a one-time reminder to everyone registered for an open house or workshop, the day before, in the venue's time zone.

  1. Registrants join the campaign
  2. One time, 10:00 AM the day before
  3. Reminder from your events line
  4. Replies land in the inbox

Seasonal service reminders

Text a service-plan campaign on the first of every month. People added during the month are in the next run.

  1. Service-plan campaign
  2. Every month, on day 1
  3. Personalized reminder to Contacts
  4. Results per run

Trade-show follow-up

New Leads from an event are usually Leads, not Contacts, so this message is written without merge fields.

  1. Event Leads in the campaign
  2. One time, the morning after
  3. Same text for every Lead
  4. Sales replies from the inbox

Location announcements

Tell customers of one location about new opening hours or a temporary closure, from that location's business number.

  1. Customers of one location
  2. Sent now from the review
  3. Text from the location's number
  4. Questions come back to that number
Every run of a recurring outreach texts everyone in the campaign who is eligible at that moment. That's right for a series of reminders. For a one-off welcome to each new member, remove people once they've been texted, or send the welcome from a Flow when the member is added.

Review and send

Know who in the campaign will get the text.

Before anything is sent, the Review & Send step checks every member the way the send will and sorts them into clear groups.

  • How many people will be sent the message, and how many records were found
  • Who was left out: no phone number, not a valid mobile number, same number as another recipient, opted out, merge fields that can't be filled in, or records the owner can't see
  • Sample messages merged for real members, and an estimate of SMS segments in total
  • A confirmation you tick before Send outreach is available

Opt-out instructions

Tell members how to stop, in every campaign text.

Add opt-out instructions is on by default for outreach. It adds Reply STOP to opt out. on its own line, and you can change the wording.

  • Turning it off shows a warning: carriers expect bulk and marketing messages to say how to opt out
  • A reply of just STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, STOPALL, REVOKE or OPTOUT is recorded as an opt-out
  • Opted-out people aren't texted again until they reply START, YES or UNSTOP; your admin decides whether a STOP blocks all your business numbers or only the one that received it
  • Opt-outs are checked when the audience is reviewed and again when each message is sent

How consent and opt-outs work

After the campaign goes out

The Outreach results card shows each run's progress, from Requested to Delivered, and its other outcomes: Blocked, Failed, Undelivered, Canceled and Unknown. Only carrier-confirmed deliveries count as Delivered.

Replies come back to the outreach's business number and appear in the shared inbox and on the member's Contact or Lead record. ConnectSMS doesn't change campaign member statuses.

FAQ

SMS to Salesforce Campaign members: common questions

Can I send SMS to a Salesforce Campaign?

Yes. In ConnectSMS, create an outreach and choose Members of a Salesforce Campaign as the audience. ConnectSMS texts the campaign's Contacts and Leads from the business number you choose, through your own Twilio account, after you review who will receive it.

Are Leads in the campaign texted too?

Yes, as long as Leads are set up for texting in your org and the message has no merge fields. Merge fields in a Campaign outreach are filled from Contact fields, so when the message uses them, members who are Leads are left out and the review tells you so.

Does a recurring outreach pick up new campaign members?

Yes. Each run reads the campaign's members at the time it sends, so people added since the last run are included and people removed are not. Every run texts everyone in the campaign who is eligible at that moment.

Why weren't some campaign members sent the message?

The review and the results say why. The usual reasons are no phone number, a number that isn't a valid mobile number, the same number as another member, an opt-out, a merge field that can't be filled in, or a record the outreach owner can't see.

Does ConnectSMS update campaign member status?

No. ConnectSMS reads the campaign's members but doesn't change them. Results are on the outreach record and on each Outreach Run, and replies arrive in the shared inbox and on the member's record.
