Getting started

What ConnectSMS is, what you need and who can use it.

What is ConnectSMS?

ConnectSMS is a Salesforce SMS and MMS app that connects Salesforce to your own Twilio account. Your team can text customers from Salesforce records, work conversations together in a shared inbox, run outreach to reports, campaigns and filtered records, and automate messaging with Flow, Apex and the Salesforce REST API.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Installing ConnectSMS from AgentExchange starts a 14-day free trial of the full edition, with every feature, and no credit card is required. After the trial, ConnectSMS is $120 per user per year. Twilio still bills your own Twilio account for anything you send during the trial, and Twilio's own trial accounts don't work with ConnectSMS, so connect an upgraded Twilio account.

Is ConnectSMS on the Salesforce AppExchange?

Yes. ConnectSMS is listed on Salesforce AgentExchange (formerly AppExchange), Salesforce's app marketplace. It installs from the listing as a managed package into your production org or a sandbox, and installing doesn't send anything: sending stays off until an admin finishes setup and turns it on.

Is ConnectSMS native to Salesforce?

ConnectSMS is built on the Salesforce Platform and installs as a managed package. Salesforce connects directly to your Twilio account, with no ConnectSMS servers in between. To receive replies you also need a public Salesforce Site, which setup walks you through.

What do I need to set up ConnectSMS?

A Twilio account with at least one number in a Messaging Service, a public Salesforce Site for incoming messages, and a Salesforce admin to work through the eight-step setup checklist: connect Twilio, sync business numbers, set up the webhook, give people access to numbers, assign permission sets, choose the records you can text, turn on background jobs and turn on sending.

Which Salesforce records can I text from?

Contacts, Leads, Accounts and Cases are set up out of the box. Admins can add other objects in Recipients and choose which phone fields ConnectSMS uses, in order.

Who can use ConnectSMS in our org?

Admins assign four permission sets: ConnectSMS User for everyday texting and the inbox, ConnectSMS Campaign Manager for outreach and shared templates, ConnectSMS Admin for setup, and ConnectSMS Automation for integration and agent users. People also need Send or View access to specific business numbers, granted in ConnectSMS Setup.

Does ConnectSMS work in the Salesforce mobile app?

ConnectSMS is designed for the Salesforce mobile app: the inbox and the Text Messages component adapt to narrow screens, and updates arrive by polling where live events aren't available. ConnectSMS Setup can be reviewed on a phone, but settings are changed on a desktop computer.

Texting & inbox

Sending from records, replies, the shared inbox, scheduling and MMS.

Can Salesforce send SMS?

Yes, with an SMS app such as ConnectSMS. Once it's installed, people send texts from the ConnectSMS Text Messages component on record pages, from the shared inbox and from outreach, and Flow, Apex and REST integrations can send them too. Every message goes out through your Twilio account.

Can Salesforce receive text messages?

Yes. Twilio passes incoming texts to a webhook on a public Salesforce Site, and ConnectSMS shows them in the conversation on the record and in the shared inbox. When exactly one Contact, or failing that one open Lead, has the sender's number, the conversation is linked to that record automatically.

Can multiple Salesforce users share an SMS inbox?

Yes. The shared inbox shows conversations on every business number you're allowed to view. You can filter by number, switch between All, Mine, Unassigned and Unread, assign a conversation to yourself, and close or reopen it. Read and unread state is shared by the team.

Which number do replies come from?

Always the business number the customer texted. ConnectSMS never switches numbers on a reply, so the customer keeps seeing the same number, and people without Send access to that number can read the conversation but not reply.

Can I schedule an SMS from Salesforce?

Yes. One-to-one texts can be scheduled in 15-minute slots up to 35 days ahead, in your Salesforce time zone. Outreach can send once, daily, weekly or monthly in the time zone you choose. Before a scheduled message goes out, ConnectSMS checks permissions, number access and opt-outs again.

Can I send MMS from Salesforce?

Yes, once an admin turns on attachments. Pictures and files are sent as MMS to US, Canadian and Australian numbers from MMS-capable business numbers, up to 10 files and 5 MB per message. ConnectSMS shares each file through a temporary link that expires after a set number of hours.

How long can a text message be?

Up to 1,600 characters. Twilio bills each segment as a separate text: a segment holds 160 standard GSM-7 characters, or 153 when a message is split, and 70 Unicode characters, or 67 when split. ConnectSMS shows the characters, segments and encoding before you send.

Can I cancel or retry a text message?

You can cancel a queued or scheduled message until it's handed to Twilio; after that it can't be recalled. A Failed or Undelivered message can be retried as a new message linked to the original. A message with an Unknown outcome is never resent automatically, because ConnectSMS first checks with Twilio whether it went out.

5 questions

Outreach & automation

Outreach to reports, campaigns and filtered records, plus Flow, Apex, REST and Agentforce.

Can Salesforce send bulk SMS?

Yes, with ConnectSMS outreach. A campaign manager chooses an audience from a Salesforce report, the members of a Salesforce Campaign, or records that match filters, writes the message, and sees exactly who will receive it before sending or scheduling. People who opted out, duplicate numbers and missing or invalid numbers are left out automatically.

Can I text the members of a Salesforce Campaign?

Yes. In outreach, choose Members of a Salesforce Campaign to text its Contacts and Leads. The review step shows who will receive the message and who is left out and why. If the message uses Contact merge fields, campaign members who are Leads can't be filled in and aren't sent that message.

Can Salesforce Flow send SMS?

Yes. ConnectSMS adds ten invocable actions to Flow Builder under ConnectSMS, including Send Text Message (with an optional Send At time to schedule it), Preview Text Message, Get Text Message Status and Reply to Text Conversation. Flow sends go through the same access, opt-out and policy checks as sending from the screen.

Can developers send SMS from Apex or the REST API?

Yes. The global Apex class ConnectSMSApi sends, previews, cancels and checks messages without making callouts, so it's safe in triggers. External systems call the same actions through Salesforce's standard REST actions endpoint, for example csms__CsmsSendMessageAction, and business errors come back as success = false rather than as HTTP errors.

Can Agentforce send SMS?

ConnectSMS's actions are global invocable actions written for Flow and AI agents, so your admin can add them to Agentforce agents as agent actions. ConnectSMS doesn't install an agent or topic for you, and messages an agent sends go through the same checks as any other message.

Twilio & billing

Your Twilio account, numbers, registration and who bills for what.

How does Twilio integrate with Salesforce?

ConnectSMS calls Twilio's API directly from Salesforce with your Account SID and Auth Token, which it verifies with Twilio before saving. Replies, opt-outs and delivery updates come back through a webhook on a Salesforce Site, and ConnectSMS checks Twilio's signature on every call. There is no ConnectSMS server in between.

Can I use my existing Twilio account?

Yes. ConnectSMS uses your own Twilio account and numbers, Twilio bills that account directly, and ConnectSMS adds no message-plan limits. Each number needs to be in a Twilio Messaging Service, and US numbers need an approved A2P 10DLC campaign or verified toll-free status.

Can I text numbers in other countries?

Yes. ConnectSMS has no country restrictions for text messages: you can send from Twilio numbers in any country and text any country your Twilio account is allowed to reach. Allow those countries in Twilio's Messaging Geographic Permissions, and check Twilio's pricing and sender rules for each one. Picture messages (MMS) are the one exception: attachments go only to US, Canadian and Australian numbers, the countries where Twilio documents MMS delivery.

Does ConnectSMS limit how many messages I can send?

ConnectSMS doesn't impose message-plan limits or quotas; Twilio bills your account for what you send. Admins can set an optional daily safeguard, and Twilio and the carriers apply their own sending rules.

Do US numbers need A2P 10DLC registration?

Yes. A US 10-digit long-code number must be in the Twilio Messaging Service linked to its approved A2P 10DLC campaign, or carriers block its messages (Twilio error 30034). Toll-free numbers must be verified instead. You register in Twilio, and Twilio charges the registration fees.

3 questions

Security & consent

Opt-outs, privacy and what ConnectSMS can and can't do for compliance.

How are SMS opt-outs handled?

When a customer replies with one of Twilio's standard opt-out keywords, such as STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE or CANCEL, ConnectSMS records the opt-out and stops texting that number; START, YES or UNSTOP opts them back in. Opt-outs are always enforced, checked when a message is requested and again when it is sent, and shown to users in the composer and inbox.

Does ConnectSMS make my text messaging compliant?

No software can do that on its own. ConnectSMS gives you controls that help your team apply the policies you choose, including opt-out enforcement, quiet hours for outreach and automation, number-level access and an audit log. You remain responsible for consent and for the rules that apply to your messages.

Who can read text messages in Salesforce?

Messages and conversations are private. People see the conversations on business numbers they have View or Send access to, and admins see all of them, including texts to Twilio numbers that aren't set up in ConnectSMS.
